Peru is not only one of the four countries on the planet with the greatest biological diversity, but it is also the second nation with the highest number of bird species in the world, being home to 1,891 of them. This update was thanks to Heinz Plenge, a professional photographer and publications editor with over 25 years of experience, who has traveled throughout our country documenting its rich natural heritage and culture.
The classification followed is the South American Checklist Committee (SACC), and the latest update was made on february, 2023. It is great news that the number of bird species is increasing, with over 20 new records in the last three years.
All of these species can be found in various types of habitats across the national territory, from seabirds fishing along our coasts to those resting in the Andean and Amazonian wetlands. Our biodiversity is clearly enhanced by the unique geography of our country.
